“Turn the mundane into the sacred…”…Phil Jackson
Pip Coburn recently asked me what I thought this quote meant from an investor or business lens.
My favorite company motto is from Old Dominion Freight Line: "Helping the world keep promises".
Long-haul driving could be top on my list for what I'd call mundane, but here, through a simple phrase, there is meaning, belonging and purpose infused.
I think that making something sacred implies that some action or process is worth preserving, caring for, and cultivating into the future. It means we are in the right place, doing the right thing, at the right time, and believe that these same actions and processes are so good, so sacred, that we work to have them live on. It doesn't really sound any different from what we hope to create in our own firms or look to identify in company culture when investing - but it's up to us to unearth what's sacred within the booked schedules, commutes, office politics, management meetings. Like long-haul driving, it can all seem mundane; it can all be sacred.
Thanks to Coburn Ventures for writing CV Fridays and asking for my reflections on this quote.
